Why Good Lighting Should Be At The Top Of Your Office Fitout Priority List

Part of the: Office Lighting Collection

You may not realise it right away, but good office lighting has a big influence on staff productivity. Proper lighting not only reduces the risk of various health issues for your employees but also increases productivity and safety in the workplace. After all, it contributes to a pleasant and exciting work environment. Furthermore, it may assist you in saving a significant amount of energy and money.

This article will discuss the importance of adequate office lighting so that you can see why it is a necessary investment for your company.

Everybody Can Perform At Optimum Conditions

Individually adjustable lighting in the office is ideal. This may appear weird since we are accustomed to standard, non-adjustable office lighting, but it makes sense. People's needs differ depending on the type of work they undertake and their age. A 60-year-old, for instance, needs 5 to 6 times more light than a 20-year-old to properly accomplish tasks. Reading on paper, writing on paper, or working in a studio need more light than merely using a computer.

Additionally, sufficient and suitable lighting is critical for ergonomics. Employees' eyesight, energy level, and overall well-being are improved by individually controlled illumination. It also increases their concentration.

As the popularity of workplace flex desks develops, businesses are being driven to review the flexibility of their workstations. This, of course, involves illumination. Modern working environments need the adaptability afforded by effective, adjustable office lighting. As a result, the combination of freestanding office lighting and adjustable office lighting is an excellent solution for flexible workspaces and dynamic organisations that change their structure regularly.

Saves Energy And Lighting

Good office lighting is essential not just for workforce well-being, but also for saving energy and minimising your expenditures. After all, one of the most expensive aspects of providing office illumination is electricity, which stands for around 60% of the budget.

Thus, investing inadequate lighting and technology is not a needless luxury. There are various energy-saving technologies on the market now that you may use at your business. LED lighting, for example, is gaining popularity.

Furthermore, lights are increasingly being outfitted with sensor technology and a sophisticated lighting management system. These technologies are used to detect presence and daylight. In the first scenario, the lamp recognises the presence or absence of a person and immediately turns off when the workplace is vacant.

This is an energy-efficient method of providing optimal illumination for your staff. It's a practice that's been used for a long time to brighten seldom used walkways and halls. Because sunshine is the best source of illumination for a working environment, lights with daylight sensing will turn off when there is enough daylight.

Give Way To Natural Light

As said earlier, it's always best to have a natural light source in your workplace. Natural light in workplace settings has been proved in several studies to boost worker satisfaction and productivity.

According to a 2017 research published in the National Sleep Foundation's Sleep Health Journal, office employees who are exposed to high amounts of natural light report better quality sleep than those who are not exposed to any natural light. This is because natural light aids in the regulation of the body's inherent circadian rhythms or sleep-wake patterns.

Better sleep results in increased employee productivity and satisfaction. Employees who get a lot of rest surpass their peers who get less than six hours of sleep each night, according to a Rand Health Quarterly study published in 2017.

Furthermore, Dr. Alan Hedge of Cornell University's Department of Design and Environmental Analysis conducted a recent study that revealed other benefits of natural light in the workplace, such as decreased eye strain, fewer headache reports, enhanced mood, less fatigue, and fewer mistakes.

Additionally, because natural light eliminates the need for artificial lighting during the day, energy expenses are further reduced. This benefits environmentally conscientious employees who appreciate their company's efforts to preserve energy.
